The Art of the Dress

Growing up, I was never glued to the television. I had scissors, pens, paper and whatever was lying around that allowed me to create.

I went to an all girls convent school from nursery to high school and looking back after close to 40 years, I can with great appreciation thank the nuns who gave me the foundations of my creative journey. The taught us how to be model wives by incorporating home economics in our education. I also grew up watching my mom create her evening wear when my Dad and would take her to his Ducktail formal military galas.

When I became a young mother at 19, I decided to take formal dressmaking classes to add to my list of survival skills. I channeled Maria Von Trapp of the Sound of Music making my children’s clothes out of curtains. There is a satisfaction that I get from seeing my vision come to fruition that cannot be fulfilled by purchasing ready to wear garment and I can only smile at the haute couture demigods for the constant inspiration.

the velvet love affair

there is something about the fluidity and movement of velvet that makes it feel like you’re wearing water. The play of colours when light hits its soft draping gives it such opulence and richness, no wonder it was made for royalty.
